He believes physicians treating autism have needed to defer their expertise and have not been in a position to seriously challenge the opposition to new, practical medical treatments. He also feels that physicians have also been disorganized and have not influenced the standard of care that is being developed by national AAP organizations.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Why autism treatment is coming under increasing attacks and what to do about it
  • How to “bullet proof” your practice
  • The ten biggest mistakes Doctors make that lead to legal problems
  • How simple changes in your charting can significantly reduce your risks.
  • Why you need electronic record keepingCase studies presented of Doctors who have had their practices challenged by Medical Regulatory Boards and how they could have avoided it.
Algis Augustine, Esq. will also present a new legal protection program exclusively for MAPS doctors.

The MAPS Umbrella Stand is a project based on the recognition that the autism community needs to be more organized and that the MAPS professional organizations will provide physicians the tools they need to stand up legally to state harassment. This project recognizes that we all need to stand together in order to achieve the kind of protection needed.

The MAPS Umbrella Stand project will include comprehensive legal defenses specific to the autism community. This strategy of a “defense in a box” will significantly lower the cost of defense by as much as 90%.

The project will include advocacy, general publicity and public support for treatment and a national counsel that could assist local attorneys. In addition, he will be explaining how taking MAPS CME courses on emerging and novel diagnosis and treatment of autism will insure a safer haven for these treatments.

Autism is an emerging area of challenge that will become very sophisticated in its attack. Since it is complex by nature, the defense is also complex. Therefore, a well-developed defense that is autism specific is required.
