Dr. Swedo received her B.A. degree from Augustana College and her M.D. from Southern Illinois University. She completed a pediatrics residency at Northwestern University (NWU) and a research fellowship in the Child Psychiatry Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the mentorship of Dr. Judith Rapoport. In 1992, Dr. Swedo received scientific tenure at the NIH and spent the next three decades conducting clinical research on obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorder and other childhood neuropsychiatric conditions. Before retiring in 2019, Dr. Swedo published more than 250 scientific manuscripts, mentored dozens of clinical research scientists, and served as founding director of the NIMH Division of Pediatric Translational Research. She currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer for the PANDAS Physicians Network (www.pandasppn.org ) and Chair of the Professional Advisory Board for the Alliance to Solve PANS and Immune-Related Encephalopathies (www.ASPIRE.care ).
