Dr. Boles is a Medical Geneticist with expertise in mitochondrial, other metabolic disorders, and channelopathies. He completed medical school at UCLA, a pediatric residency at Harbor-UCLA, and a genetics fellowship at Yale. Dr. Boles’ clinical and research focus has been on the genetics of common neurological disorders, including autism, ADHD, chronic pain, fatigue, and cyclic vomiting. He has over 90 published papers. Dr. Boles was the Medical Director of a DNA sequencing laboratory for 6 years. He currently is the Director of the NeuroGenomics Program at NeurAbilities, where he applies whole DNA sequencing to determine the cause of disease in his patients. Dr. Boles is also the Chief Medical & Scientific Officer of NeuroNeeds, a company that produces natural nutritional products to assist people with neurological conditions, including autism and other conditions listed above.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is the reading of the entire DNA code of life, all 3 billion base pairs that is unique to each of us. The tools to be able to read and interpret the DNA code in individual patients has only been available in the last few years, and it has completely revolutionized Dr. Boles’ management of many common conditions including neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. As of this writing (11/2022), WGS was able to determine the cause of disease in 75% of his patients with autism. DNA variants likely related to disease were identified in some of the other patients as well. Fully 80% of autism patients had a treatment recommended based upon the results of DNA sequencing. Dr. Boles' practice includes: 1. A comprehensive analysis of the patient and family from an extended interview and chart review. It is important to really know the person in order to understand DNA testing results, since each individual has tens of thousands of variants identified. 2. Assistance in ordering the appropriate genetic testing, as well as help in coverage by insurance. 3. Reading the full raw sequence himself, not relying solely upon the findings of the clinical laboratory. 4. An in-depth discussion of the genetic findings, how they fit with the patient’s disease, and potential treatment options with the family and/or physician. This service takes many hours, is not reimbursed by insurance, and unfortunately at this point is self-pay only. However, DNA testing, the larger cost, is usually covered by insurance in the USA.
